A New Future for Port of Brisbane is Part of the Northshore Hamilton Plan
The unparalleled opportunity to create a new waterside precinct on the river resulted from a
long-term strategy to facilitate growth and
economic efficiencies for the Port of Brisbane.
Relocation from the historic Hamilton wharves site was first investigated in the 1970s. Volume of shipping, longer turnaround times and the increasing size of vessels led to the creation of Brisbane’s deepwater port at Fisherman Islands – now the fastest growing port in Australia. The relocation is underway, with the remaining transition of dry and liquid bulk import/export facilities due to be completed within the next 10 years.
The Evolution of Northshore
In recognition of the opportunity created by
the relocation of port operations from Hamilton
to Fisherman Islands, the Port of Brisbane Corporation Limited (PBC) established the
Northshore Development Group (NDG) in 2003 to prepare a master plan for the area being vacated, and oversee the provision of trunk infrastructure
and sale of land.
Extensive investigations were undertaken by a
multi-disciplinary project team into the existing characteristics of the Northshore Hamilton project area, to inform the development of a draft master plan. Community involvement and input from Brisbane City Council (BCC), State Government agencies and other key stakeholders was actively sought.
In May 2006 the draft master plan was released
for a six week public display period and was
positively received.
